Cobalt (HSS-Co) drill bits are high-speed steel drills with cobalt alloyed into the steel, which helps them hold an edge at higher temperatures than standard HSS. Choosing a cobalt drill Cobalt drills earn their place on stainless steel and other tough materials, where a standard HSS bit loses its edge quickly. For mild steel, aluminium and timber, a standard HSS jobber is usually enough. Whatever you are drilling, use cutting lubricant, keep a steady feed rather than letting the bit rub, and match speed to the material and drill diameter. Sutton listings state the cobalt content (5%, 8% or 11% depending on the series) and Bordo and Saber sets are marked HSS-Co5.
