Cotter pins, also called split pins, keep nuts, clevis pins and shafts from backing off. R-clips do the same job and fit and remove quickly. Choosing a cotter pin Match the pin diameter to the hole and the length to the fastener. Metric and imperial pins are listed separately, so choose the one that matches your hole. Use zinc plated for general use and stainless steel where corrosion matters. An R-clip is quicker to fit and remove than a split pin, and suits pins that are removed often. For a one-off repair, an assortment kit saves hunting for the right size. Always check the data sheet.
