Choosing a plate clamp Start with how the plate will be lifted. A vertical plate clamp lifts a plate that is standing on edge, and horizontal plate clamps are used as a pair to lift a plate flat. A universal clamp is designed to handle both. Then check the plate thickness and hardness the clamp is rated for, and choose capacity that covers the heaviest plate. Plate clamps grip by friction, so the jaw, plate surface and load direction all matter. Always check the data sheet. Confirm the working load limit, the plate thickness range and the surface and hardness limits before you lift, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for use and inspection.
