About

Indoor air quality and thermal comfort are two sides of the same coin — and addressing both requires more than opening a window. This category brings together the two primary systems responsible for controlling what you breathe and how your building feels: mechanical ventilation , which manages fresh air supply, moisture extraction, and pollutant removal; and air conditioning , which actively controls temperature and humidity year-round. Both have become increasingly important as buildings are built or retrofitted to higher levels of airtightness. Better-insulated buildings retain heat well in winter but overheat readily in summer, and without controlled ventilation, they accumulate moisture, CO₂, and airborne pollutants. A correctly specified combination of ventilation and cooling addresses all of these in a coordinated, energy-efficient way. Ventilation covers extractor fans for wet rooms, centralised Mechanical Extract Ventilation (MEV) for multi-room residential applications, Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) for whole-house fresh air with up to 95% heat recovery, and Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) for retrofit condensation control. Ventilation strategy is a regulatory requirement under Part F of the Building Regulations for new builds and most notifiable renovation work. Air conditioning covers portable units for no-install flexibility, wall-mounted inverter split systems that function as year-round heat pumps with A++ efficiency ratings, and ceiling cassette systems for commercial and open-plan environments. Modern split systems on R32 refrigerant deliver both cooling and supplementary heating at efficiencies well above direct electric resistance, making them a practical climate control investment for any well-used space.
