About

Off-grid battery storage covers the deep-cycle and lithium products used to store energy independently of the mains supply — for solar PV, wind turbine charging, leisure vehicles, marine installations, and standalone backup systems. Unlike starter batteries, which deliver short high-current bursts to crank an engine, deep-cycle batteries are built to be discharged repeatedly and substantially without damaging the plates or cells, making them the correct choice for any application where energy is drawn steadily over hours rather than seconds. This collection brings together Gel and AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) deep-cycle batteries alongside modern LiFePO4 lithium batteries from established brands including Pylon and Fogstar, covering the full range from budget-conscious lead-acid replacements to high-cycle-life lithium systems for demanding off-grid use. Solar and Wind Charging Applications Batteries paired with solar PV arrays or small wind turbines need to tolerate irregular, weather-dependent charging patterns and partial-state-of-charge cycling without sulphation or premature capacity loss. Gel batteries handle this well thanks to their sealed, maintenance-free construction and good tolerance of slow or interrupted charge cycles, though they require a charge controller with a gel-specific charge profile to avoid undercharging. AGM batteries offer a lower internal resistance and faster charge acceptance than Gel, which suits systems with variable solar input, but still require correctly configured MPPT or PWM charge controller settings for the battery chemistry. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries such as the Fogstar Drift and Energy ranges and Pylon's lithium modules accept a much higher charge current, reach full charge faster on limited winter daylight hours, and maintain usable capacity far longer over repeated cycling — an important consideration where panel output is constrained by array size or orientation.
