Cherry tomato seeds produce the most frequently harvested tomatoes in many home gardens. Their smaller fruit ripens quickly, invites daily picking, and often sets more reliably than a heavy beefsteak crop. Yet cherry tomatoes are not one uniform thing: fruit may be round, pear-shaped, grape-like, currant-sized, dark, striped, yellow, orange, pink, or red. Most cherry varieties are indeterminate and require a real cage or trellis. A plant described as “small-fruited” may still become an eight-foot vine. Compact, dwarf, and micro varieties belong in a different planning category. Read the plant-height and growth-habit fields before assuming that small fruit means a small plant. For the best flavor, harvest after the fruit reaches its mature color and releases easily from the stem. Keep soil moisture even as clusters begin ripening; sudden water after drought can split thin-skinned fruit. Pick frequently, remove damaged fruit, and keep the lower canopy off the soil in humid weather. Open-pollinated cherry tomatoes can be saved through normal tomato fermentation.
