About
The Kennedy Half Dollar is a coin with a fascinating history. It was first minted in 1964, shortly after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The coin features the President's portrait on the obverse side, and the seal of the President on the reverse. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar was made with 90% silver, weighing 12.5 grams. However, in 1965, the mint changed the composition to a blend of 40% silver and 60% copper-nickel due to rising silver prices. From 1965 to 1970, Kennedy Half Dollars were made with the same 40% silver composition. However, starting in 1971, the mint changed the composition to a pure copper-nickel blend, which is still used today. Kennedy Half Dollars are a popular choice for coin collectors, and certified examples can be highly sought after.
