Lincoln Cents

Lincoln Cents were first minted in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. These cents (minted from 1909 until the middle of 1982) are composed of 95% copper and 5% zinc, and each coin weighs 2.5 grams or 0.0882 troy ounces. In the middle of 1982, the mint made pennies 95% zinc and 5% copper due to rising copper prices. The new composition was more cost-effective, as zinc was less expensive than copper. Despite the change in composition, the new pennies are still the same size, weight, and color as the old ones. The obverse of the wheat cent features a bust of Abraham Lincoln, while the reverse originally depicted two wheat ears, earning them the nickname "wheat pennies." In 1959, the reverse design was changed to the Lincoln Memorial, and in 2010, a new reverse design was introduced featuring the Union Shield.
