The Amazon Basin is one of the most biodiverse freshwater ecosystems on earth. Its rivers, tributaries, and flooded forests have shaped some of the most iconic species in the aquarium hobby. This collection features Amazon freshwater fish and Brazilian species whose lineage traces back to those waters. Some are responsibly wild-collected. Many are bred overseas, in the United States, or locally here in Indiana. What connects them is not where they were raised — but where their story began. What “Origins” Means to Us At Aquatic Arts, origin is about ecological lineage — not simply point of export. These species evolved in warm, soft, tannin-influenced freshwater shaped by wood, leaf litter, and seasonal floodplains. Understanding that heritage helps you design more intentional aquariums — even without recreating a strict biotope. Wild Heritage. Modern Stewardship. Some species in this collection are sustainably collected from native waters. Others are bred in overseas aquaculture facilities or here in the United States, including local partners. Our Curator evaluates each species based on: • Adaptability to aquarium life • Ethical sourcing practices • Long-term viability • Stability in captivity Origin tells the story. Designing Around Amazonian Species Fish of Amazonian lineage generally thrive in: • Stable, warm water (typically 74–82°F) • Gentle to moderate flow • Natural structure such as wood and leaf litter • Open swim lanes for schooling species • Soft to moderately soft conditions You don’t need to recreate a strict biotope to appreciate their heritage. But understanding where they evolved helps you build more intentional aquariums.
