Compare to the Classic German Equatorial Mount, the counterweight and Declination Axis are on the same side of the mount. The center balanced mounts are built to put more weight of the payload at the center of gravity for better stability. They are usually more compact than the german equatorial ones. They also allow you to get closer to the Equator than regular equatorial mounts.
