About

Why Wooden Toys A wooden toy has weight to it. A child feels the difference between a heavy block and a light one, and that feedback is part of what they are learning. Plastic of the same shape tells them nothing, fades in sunlight and cracks when it is stood on. The other difference is what the toy asks of the child. A stacker can be a tower, a bridge, a fence, a set of boats or a snake across the floor. A toy that makes a noise when a button is pressed can be one thing, and children work that out within a week. Ours are solid wood with non-toxic, BPA-free finishes, built to ASTM and CPSIA standards and safe for mouthing. Stacking, Building and Sorting Stackers, blocks and puzzle sets teach size, order, balance and counting without any of it being announced. Because there is no fixed outcome, a two year old and a five year old use the same set completely differently, which is why these tend to be the longest lived toys in a house. Number and letter blocks add early maths and literacy to the same activity, at the stage when a child is building anyway. Movement and Balance Toys Balance beams, stepping stones, rockers and push walkers work the body rather than the hands. Balancing on a narrow surface builds core strength and ankle stability, and a set that can be rearranged means the child designs the course as well as walking it. Pretend Play and Practical Life Play food, tool sets, doctor kits and market props let a child rehearse the jobs they watch adults do all day. Montessori calls this practical life, and it develops sequencing, vocabulary and fine motor control alongside the imagination.
