Odachi and Nodachi Swords

The odachi is the largest sword Japan produced. Where a katana runs roughly 40 inches overall, an odachi runs past 50 and often past 60, with a blade long enough that it was slung across the back or carried by an attendant rather than worn through the belt. Surviving examples are mostly temple offerings, which tells you something about how they were regarded: too large for ordinary carry, kept and dedicated rather than worn. Nodachi is the other name you will see for the same class of sword, and the distinction between the two terms is looser than the internet suggests. Both describe an oversized field sword. Where writers do separate them, odachi tends to mean the very largest temple-scale blades and nodachi the somewhat shorter field swords, but the usage is not consistent even in Japanese sources. Choosing an odachi Length The pieces here run from 47 to 62 inches overall. That difference is substantial in the hand and on the wall. A 47 inch nodachi reads as an outsized katana. A 62 inch odachi reads as its own object and needs a mount and a wall to match. Check the overall length against the space before ordering. Steel Both 1095 high carbon and pattern-welded Damascus are available in this range. 1095 is the traditional monosteel, typically finishing around 56 to 58 HRC, and takes the clay-tempered hamon where that option is offered. Damascus is layered high carbon forged so the pattern runs the length of the blade, and the pattern on a blade this long is a considerable amount of visible forge work. Both want to be kept clean, dry and lightly oiled. Fittings and mounting Tsuka length scales with the blade on a sword this size, and the balance point sits further forward than on a katana. If the sword is going on a wall, check that the mount is rated for the weight and the span; standard two-hook katana stands are usually too narrow for an odachi.
