About

Seeing Between is a two-person exhibition of new oil paintings by Alex Garant and Lukifer Aurelius . Garant’s work features portraits embellished with quadruple-vision motifs, unsettling the viewer by almost literally jarring the view on conventional portraiture. Aurelius’s work also treads the line between the familiar and the unfamiliar, with the quiet beauty of dreamlike figures seemingly infused with fire or, at the very least, embers, striking a chord with perhaps our most primitive memories. Opening Reception: Saturday, May 5, from 6pm – 9pm. Free entry. This exhibition runs from May 6 to May 27 and runs alongside Shaun Tan solo exhibition, “Lost & Found” . Lukifer Aurelius has been exploring different states of experience through the idea of the individual as a constellation of forces and sub-personalities; some of this is manifested through gesture and spatial arrangement. Aurelius has also explored the intersection between the familiar and the unfamiliar, where one’s conceptual frameworks are met with forces more complex and mysterious than can be accounted for. Alex Garant’s pieces in this show explore the idea that what we see and what we feel are never the same: there is a disconnect between visual stimuli and the emotional response associated with them. While maintaining a seductive aesthetic and working with traditional media, Alex Garant's new series is meant to invite the viewer into a different way to experience art. Her work creates a tension between beauty and disharmony.
