Railing Latchers is an exhibition of new works by Annie Montgomerie opening at Beinart Gallery’s new location, 307 Victoria St, Brunswick. Opening reception: Saturday, February 27th, 5pm - 9pm. This exhibition will run from February 28th to March 21st and will coincide with Erik Thor Sandberg's show, What Follows and our annual group exhibition of Australian artists, Antipodes 2021 . Montgomerie’s inspiration for this show is a long-running theme through her work: childhood, including the hopes and fears she held growing up. She captures these things in the moods of the figures, on their faces and in their stances. The Railing Latchers are the ones that cling to the railings outside of school begging not to have to go inside, or those at playtime in huddled groups waiting for the bell to ring to get back into the warmth. Young animals have raw emotion on their faces to portray to the viewer a nostalgic state of being and to beg for empathy and also admiration. The fabrics and other media used and the clothes that were made for the pieces all add to the theme of times gone and the children that occupied them. Annie Montgomerie is an artist based in Dorset, United Kingdom. She creates her ‘storybook beings’ and wall hangings from leather, velvet, cotton, up-cycled wool garments, muslin, 100% wool felt, moleskin and blankets. Most of the fabrics are foraged where she lives. She adds embellishments such as vintage buttons, jewellery, and charms.
