About

Clouds Over Wonderland is an exhibition of new paintings by Brian Mashburn . The works depict subjects which, though being largely commonplace - backyards, birds and critters - seem to transcend their foggy environs. Opening reception: Saturday, February 3rd, 6 - 9pm. Drinks will be provided by our friends at Better Beer and Malocchio. This exhibition will run from February 4th - February 25th and will coincide with S.V. Williams' ' Illuminatural ', Robyn Rich's ' Portrayal ' and Anne Juul Christophersen's ' Circuli Vitae ' . This collection of 18 paintings is based around the notion of an obscured ideal, the wonders of the natural world clouded by the frenetic pace of daily life; going unnoticed, unappreciated and undervalued. This concept has felt particularly relevant as Mashburn has watched his 1 year old son grow and develop. Amazing transformations happen on a daily basis: teeth where there were none yesterday, garbled sounds becoming words. All the while the mundane preoccupations of power bills, dirty dishes and deadlines effectively supplant the sublime with the terrestrial. Brian Mashburn is an American artist based in the mountains of North Carolina. He studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, receiving a BFA in 2002. Brian's work depicts urban and industrial landscapes in close proximity to the natural world. Primarily an oil painter, Mashburn uses narrative and meticulous attention to detail to engage the viewer. His work is informed by everyday observations as well as an interest in history, natural science, and philosophy.
