Caroline Gaudreault is a Canadian magical realism painter born in Alma, in Quebec’s Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region. Raised in a creative environment, art became part of her life from an early age. She studied visual arts at Collège d'Alma before pursuing university studies in literature, history, Spanish, and programming. For several years, she worked across these fields while continuing to practise art sporadically. While living in Mexico, Gaudreault encountered the imagery and traditions of the Day of the Dead, which inspired her to return more seriously to painting and drawing. Fascinated by skeletal figures adorned with flowers and placed in ordinary, everyday settings, she began creating works featuring characters that are part human or animal, part skeleton. In 2018, Gaudreault began focusing more intently on her practice and refining her distinctive visual language, drawing on both Mexican folklore and classical portraiture. Blooming, empty eye sockets recur throughout her work as a contemporary memento mori, a reminder of life’s impermanence. Her paintings balance whimsy and darkness, exploring the beauty and fragility of life alongside the extraordinary and mundane aspects of everyday experience.
