Baja offers some of the most exciting saltwater fly fishing anywhere, with roosterfish, striped marlin, and dorado leading an impressive list of hard-fighting gamefish. Roosterfish are the signature species of Baja. Their range is relatively limited, and Mexico's East Cape is home to one of the world's premier roosterfish fisheries. These powerful predators patrol beaches and nearshore waters hunting baitfish, creating incredible opportunities for sight fishing. Roosters can be found throughout much of the year, with seasonal migrations bringing some of the best opportunities for both numbers and large fish. Offshore, striped marlin provide an entirely different experience. Baja has become one of the premier destinations for anglers looking to catch a marlin on fly. Watching a striped marlin light up behind a teased bait before switching its attention to a fly is about as exciting as fly fishing gets. Dorado, or mahi-mahi, add another spectacular target. Fast, aggressive, and brilliantly colored, dorado readily attack baitfish patterns and can provide outstanding action around floating structure, current lines, and concentrations of bait. Yellowtail, amberjack, sierra, bonito, and numerous other species round out the fishery. Best of all, many of these predators are chasing the same baitfish, so a relatively straightforward selection of baitfish and streamer patterns can cover an incredible variety of Baja fly fishing opportunities.
