Hercule Poirot, famous Belgian detective, is travelling home to London on the cross-continental train when it’s stopped by snowfall in 1930s Yugoslavia. This classic work of detective fiction has thrilled readers ever since its first publication in 1934, and has been filmed many times. Miss Marple is one of Christie’s most beloved characters. The amateur detective appeared in twelve novels, six films, and multiple television series. The elderly spinster uses her shrewd intelligence and wealth of experience to bring the guilty parties to justice. She was created in order to give old maids a voice, and styled her after her grandmother’s friends. Agatha Miller was born in Torquay in 1890. She started writing The Mysterious Affair at Styles in 1916 because her sister Madge bet her she couldn’t write a good detective story. It introduced the immortal Hercule Poirot, who was inspired by the Belgian soldiers and refugees she encountered during her day job as a nurse. She married Archie Christie on Christmas Eve 1914, and he returned to the Great War in France three days after. After the war, the couple moved to London, and Christie found a publisher.
