About

What is a Patella Band or Knee Support Band? A knee band is a type of knee brace or support that focuses on compression of the patellar ligament—which is more commonly known as the patellar tendon—to help minimize stress on the tibial tuberosity (alternately known as the tibial tubercle, the tibial tuberosity is a bony protrusion on the front part of the tibial bone in the lower leg, which forms a small bump below the kneecap). Knee bands are best used to treat patellar tendonitis (more commonly referred to as jumper's knee) and Osgood-Schlatter's disease. They are also effective in providing the knee area with additional support. What Is Patellar Tendonitis and Osgood-Schlatter's Disease and How Can Knee Support Bands Help? Patellar tendonitis or jumper's knee is the inflammation of the patellar tendon. The patellar tendon is the small, thick tendon between your kneecap (patella) and the shin bone, which helps link your quadriceps and kneecap to your lower leg. Patellar tendonitis is considered an overuse injury, which is typically caused by jumping or running—hence the term jumper's knee. Patellar tendonitis is a condition that is inconvenient at the very least to extremely painful at the very most. It usually starts with a very mild pain that slowly progresses into a more significant condition. Fortunately, patellar bands can effectively minimize the symptoms of patellar tendonitis or jumper's knee. Osgood-Schlatter's disease (OSD) is similar to patellar tendonitis in that it is also considered an overuse injury. Specifically, though, it is an irritation of the patellar ligament, particularly at the tibial tuberosity. OSD is a common knee disorder that afflicts children and adolescents, especially during the beginning of growth spurts, which usually occur at any time between the ages of thirteen for girls or between ten and fifteen for boys. A good-quality knee band can help treat Osgood-Schlatter's disease. A patella tendon band or knee band brace is frequently
