Sambo, a Russian acronym for "self-defense without weapons," is a dynamic and versatile martial art that originated in the Soviet Union in the early 20th century. Combining elements of traditional Russian folk wrestling, Judo, and other grappling arts, Sambo is renowned for its effectiveness in both sport competition and real-life self-defense scenarios. The history of Sambo can be traced back to the aftermath of the Russian Revolution in 1917, when the Soviet government sought to develop a practical and effective system of hand-to-hand combat training for its military and law enforcement personnel. In 1938, the Soviet Union officially recognized Sambo as a sport and established the All-Union Sambo Federation to oversee its development and promotion.
