About

Shorinji Kempo ( 少林寺拳法) is a modern Japanese martial art that combines self-defense techniques, meditation, philosophy, and physical fitness training. Founded by Doshin So in post-war Japan, Shorinji Kempo emphasizes the development of both physical and mental strength, as well as the cultivation of moral character and social responsibility. The history of Shorinji Kempo dates back to 1947, when Doshin So, a martial artist and Buddhist monk, established the art in Tadotsu, a small town in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. Influenced by his experiences studying traditional Chinese martial arts and his deep understanding of Buddhist philosophy, So sought to create a martial art that not only taught self-defense techniques but also instilled values of compassion, humility, and integrity. The name "Shorinji Kempo" reflects the art's origins and philosophy. "Shorinji" is derived from the Shaolin Temple, the legendary birthplace of martial arts in China, symbolizing the art's roots in traditional Chinese martial arts. "Kempo" means "the way of the fist," emphasizing the practical application of martial techniques in combat and self-defense. Central to the practice of Shorinji Kempo is the concept of "goho" (hard techniques) and "juho" (soft techniques), which represent the balance between physical power and flexibility, assertiveness and adaptability. Techniques in Shorinji Kempo include strikes, kicks, joint locks, throws, and grappling, providing practitioners with a comprehensive toolkit for self-defense in a variety of situations. In addition to physical training, Shorinji Kempo incorporates meditation, breathing exercises, and philosophical study into its curriculum. Practitioners learn to cultivate a calm and focused mind, developing awareness of their thoughts, emotions, and surroundings. The philosophy of Shorinji Kempo emphasizes the importance of compassion, respect for others, and the pursuit of harmony and truth in all aspects of life. Since its founding, Shorinji Kem
