About

Toshihiko Koga ( 古賀 稔彦) (1967-2021) was one of Japan's most celebrated judo champions whose dynamic fighting style and technical innovations revolutionized the sport. Born in Saga Prefecture, Japan, Koga began practicing judo at age seven and quickly showed exceptional talent. Koga rose to international prominence in the late 1980s, competing in the lightweight (71 kg) and later half-middleweight (78 kg) divisions. He became known for his signature technique, the "Koga seoi-nage" (shoulder throw), which he executed with remarkable speed and precision, often catching opponents completely off guard. His competitive achievements were extraordinary: Olympic gold medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Games and silver medalist at the 1996 Atlanta Games; three-time World Champion (1989, 1991, and 1995); and multiple All-Japan Judo Championship titles. In 2000, he was inducted into the International Judo Federation Hall of Fame. Beyond his competitive success, Koga was revered for his technical brilliance and innovative approach to judo. His fighting style combined classical technique with explosive athleticism and tactical genius. After retiring from competition, he served as a coach for Japan's national team and mentored many champions. In March 2021, Koga passed away at age 53 after battling cancer. His legacy continues through his technical contributions to judo and the inspiration he provided to generations of judoka worldwide. He remains widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted and influential judoka in the sport's modern history.
