Cooktops: gas, electric or induction Your cooktop choice comes down to how you cook and what services run to your kitchen: Gas: instant heat control, familiar for most Australian cooks, needs a gas connection. Electric (ceramic): smooth glass surface, easier to clean, slower to respond to temperature changes than gas or induction. Induction: fastest heat-up and precise control, works only with magnetic (usually cast iron or stainless steel) cookware. Check the cut-out size against your benchtop before ordering. Most standard cooktops fit a 60cm or 90cm opening, but always confirm with the product's install dimensions. Ovens: built-in vs freestanding Built-in ovens sit under the benchtop or at eye level in a tall cabinet, keeping the cooktop separate. Freestanding (upright) cookers combine the oven and cooktop in one unit, a practical option for smaller kitchens or straightforward replacements. Measure your existing cavity width and depth, and check whether your kitchen needs single or double oven capacity. Rangehoods and ventilation A rangehood needs to suit both your cooktop width and your ducting setup: Ducted: vents cooking air outside, better for removing heat, smoke and odours. Recirculating: filters and returns air to the room, useful where external ducting isn't possible. Match the rangehood width to your cooktop (or wider) and check the extraction rating (m³/hr) suits the size of your kitchen. Dishwashers: size and finish Standard dishwashers are 60cm wide to fit a standard cabinet opening, with slimline 45cm models available for smaller kitchens.
