For those who find a 4x4 CNC Router too large for their space, the 4x2 Shapeoko 5.1 Pro is ideal. It's designed to be open from front to back, allowing full 4x8 plywood sheets to pass through the machine without the need for cutting them down beforehand, simplifying the process for larger projects like furniture or cabinets. The 4x2 Shapeoko 5.1 Pro is the perfect balance between overall size and versatility in a CNC router. 2x4 CNC Router vs. 4x2 CNC Router The first thing to consider is the orientation of the machine. If it's a 2x4 router, with the 2-foot dimension across the X-axis and the 4-foot dimension across the Y-axis, then the machine will not be able to fit full-width plywood through the machine. If full-width plywood is important to you, then you must look for a machine that's 4x2, with the 4-foot dimension across the X-axis and the 2-foot dimension across the Y-axis. Some people believe that a 2x4 machine is more rigid because the length of the unsupported gantry is lower. For Shapeoko machines, this is not a factor: The Shapeoko gantry extrusion is very rigid.
