Asylum 13 cigars were one of three blends released at the Asylum Cigar launch in 2012. The project of Tom Lazuka, Kevin Baxter, and Christian Eiroa, Asylum Cigars looks to offer an escape from reality and push tradition by delivering crazy wide ring gauges and other new customer experiences. By the time of the Asylum launch, Christian Eiroa was already doing big things with Honduran soil for the Camacho brand with numerous 90+ rated blends. The 13 was the first attempt at Nicaragua, and Asylum uses the line to highlight some of the best Nicaragua has to offer. The 91-rated Asylum 13 cigars are Nicaraguan puros. Aged Cuban-seed long-fillers are grown in the volcanic soils of Nicaragua and wrapped up snug in a dark, oily Nicaraguan Habano leaf. This is a medium-full strength, complex smoke that burns slow and cool, providing more than enough space to take the details in with comfort. Once we got one burning, we were met with a fine dose of black pepper and leather. Cocoa followed shortly. A little further down and the pepper dies a bit as the cocoa morphs into something more milk chocolate and surges to the forefront, though the pepper and leather, still very much alive, are not letting us forget about their presence. And it’s a good thing because it’s all about the black pepper and leather during the final third. Asylum 13 cigars utilize Nicaraguan tobaccos well that provides power to the stick without losing the ability to enjoy a wide range of flavors. This banger is not one to be missed.
