Since the company’s formation in 2012, Asylum has carved out a spot among the new generation of brands looking to push the cigar production envelope with offerings like huge ring gauges. This is often done subtly, as in the presentation of Asylum 13 Medulla Oblongata cigars. The boxes come in a 50/50 split where the cigars with an Oblongiata paper wrapper are box-pressed, and those labeled Medulla are round. What an excellent touch and surprising way for the consumer to experience the blend in two formats. Plus, everyone needs more brain soothing, right? Right. Asylum 13 Medulla Oblongata cigars are Honduran puros. The wrapper is a Honduran Corojo, as are the binder and filler. With the paper wraps removed, a great-looking milk chocolate brown leaf presents itself. It glistens and makes the mouth water. The pre-light aroma is that of coffee, cedar, cream, and butterscotch. Once lit, there is a good deal of black pepper, earth, and cedar, though the black pepper is clearly in charge. A little further down, there’s some sweetness with a new spice behind it. Toward the end and coffee has been with us for some time. The pepper and spice and earthy notes are all in the forefront.
