When Asylum came to life in 2012, they wanted to push the boundaries of what is and what is not considered a gimmick. This isn’t always easy in an industry steeped in tradition. Is an 8 x 80 cigar a gimmick if the smoke is high-quality? We think not. Or what about the Asylum 13 Ogre cigars use of a Habano and candela barber pole wrapper? Incognito? Absolutely not. Gimmick? Not by a long shot, but we’ll explore that innovative wrapper later. The guys at Asylum prove over and over that a cigar company can use traditional techniques to produce premium cigars while still pushing the envelope and trying new things. After all, the second an artist decides they have learned all they can about their craft is the exact second they start to fall behind or simply become resigned to a life of repetition. At the heart of Asylum 13 Ogre cigars are quality Nicaraguan long-fillers and binders. Wrapping these up is a barber pole using candela as one of the wrappers. The other portion is Habano. The Ogre comes in several large sizes with ring gauges up to 80 available. Espresso, spice, and sweetness dominate the cold draw. Once lit, there’s a wave of black pepper to greet you. The smoke is smooth and creamy and soon delivers earthiness, leather, coffee, and cocoa. Headed into the second half, the earthiness has picked up along with the leather. The spice seems all but gone. Scratch that. Finishing things up here and the spice is back, but nothing overpowering. It’s actually quite nice while the other flavors all balance one another out.
