When Asylum Cigars launched in 2012, the goal was to create a place where out-of-the-box ideas could be tested and released. The most significant opportunity, they felt, was in the lack of big ring gauged cigars. Once they started releasing 7 x 70 and 8 x 80 sticks, they met near-immediate success. Since then, they’ve released a Habano and candela barber pole wrapper cigar created an entire project (not just a line)—Asylum 33 cigars—that use only the finest aged tobacco Asylum can acquire, and so much more. Nyctophilia is when one prefers night or darkness. Those with Nyctophilia feel their most comfortable in the dark, by themselves, and will often stay awake late into the night as a result. We don’t think that was necessarily the goal of Asylum Nyctophilia cigars, though these dark Maduros do appear to have a thing or two to reveal about the dark side of smoke. Asylum Nyctophilia cigars are another quality blend brought to you by Tom Lazuka and Christian Eiroa. Produced in Honduras using all Maduro tobaccos throughout, this cigar runs on a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-fillers. Covering everything up is a dark San Andres wrapper. It’s near veinless with some tooth and an oily sheen. On the cold draw, we’re getting chocolate and dried fruit. Once burning, there are notes of strong pepper, chocolate, and coffee. During the second third, the coffee and chocolate are still steady. The pepper has mellowed, though a spice note is on the rise. The chocolate is in charge now, with the spice serving as a nice balance as things close out. The smoke was rich and chewy. The draw and burn were excellent.
