What is an SPD and which type do I need in Pakistan? A Surge Protection Device (SPD) is a sacrificial MOV-based clamping device installed on AC mains or DC PV strings to absorb transient overvoltages from lightning, utility switching, and equipment faults — protecting downstream loads from voltage spikes that exceed their insulation. IEC 61643-11 classifies SPDs into three types: Type 1 (Class I) at the service entrance for direct lightning strike protection, Type 2 (Class II) at the main DB box for residual indirect surges, and Type 3 (Class III) at the point-of-use for sensitive equipment. Pakistani residential / commercial installs almost always need Type 2 at the main DB ; sites with a roof-mounted lightning rod also need Type 1 at the service entrance; sensitive loads (medical, IT, AV) get Type 3 at the wall outlet.
