It registers 7.5–8 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it one of the most durable blue gemstones available. The finest aquamarine comes from the high-altitude pegmatite deposits of Pakistan (Shigar Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan), where transparent crystals with intense blue saturation are recovered at elevations above 4,000 meters.
