Aragonite Crystal — Star Clusters & Sputnik Formations from Morocco Aragonite is a calcium carbonate mineral (CaCO₃) that shares its chemistry with calcite but crystallizes in an entirely different structure — orthorhombic rather than trigonal — producing forms that calcite simply cannot make. The most iconic of these is the radiating "sputnik" star cluster, formed by cyclic twinning: six individual crystals intergrown around a central axis, mimicking hexagonal symmetry that aragonite's crystal system doesn't actually possess. These come primarily from the Sefrou and Tazouta regions of Morocco, where iron inclusions give the clusters their warm reddish-brown color. Aragonite is also one of the most biologically important minerals on earth — mollusk shells, coral skeletons, and the nacre (mother-of-pearl) lining of pearl oysters are all built from aragonite. Over geological time, the mineral slowly converts to its more stable polymorph, calcite, which makes well-crystallized mineral specimens genuinely rare and prized by collectors. The mineral was formally named in 1797 after Molina de Aragón in Guadalajara, Spain, where classic twinned crystals were first scientifically described. In crystal traditions, aragonite is associated with grounding, patience, and centering — qualities people often connect to its structured, radiating geometry.
