The Bolívar and Potosí departments are the primary mining regions, where amethyst forms in volcanic geodes and hydrothermal veins within Mesozoic basalts. Bolivia is also the world's only commercial source of natural ametrine — a bicolor variety where amethyst (purple) and citrine (yellow-orange) occur in the same crystal. This happens when different parts of the crystal experience different oxidation states during growth, causing iron impurities to produce different colors in different zones. The Anáhi Mine in eastern Bolivia is the primary source, and genuine ametrine from this locality is a true collector's mineral.
