About
Bolivian Amethyst — Deep Saturation From the Andes Bolivian amethyst is prized among collectors for its exceptional color saturation, natural crystal points, and remarkable clarity even in large specimens. While Brazil dominates the global amethyst market by volume, Bolivia produces some of the most intensely colored material available — a deep, rich purple that holds its saturation across the full face of the crystal rather than concentrating only at the tips. The Bolívar and Potosí departments are the primary mining regions, where amethyst forms in volcanic geodes and hydrothermal veins within Mesozoic basalts. Bolivia is also the world's only commercial source of natural ametrine — a bicolor variety where amethyst (purple) and citrine (yellow-orange) occur in the same crystal. This happens when different parts of the crystal experience different oxidation states during growth, causing iron impurities to produce different colors in different zones. The Anáhi Mine in eastern Bolivia is the primary source, and genuine ametrine from this locality is a true collector's mineral. Bolivian amethyst tends to form as well-defined prismatic crystals rather than the druzy geode linings more common in Brazilian material.
