Crystals for Beginners You don't need to know anything about crystals to start collecting them. You just need to pick one up. The best beginner crystal is whichever one you can't stop looking at — but if you want a more structured starting point, here's where decades of collector consensus lands. The Essential Five Amethyst. Purple quartz, Mohs 7, virtually indestructible for a display piece. The most popular crystal in the world for a reason — every specimen looks different, it's affordable at every size, and the color ranges from pale lavender to deep violet depending on iron content and origin. Start with a small cluster ($15) or a palm stone ($20). Rose Quartz. Pink quartz colored by microscopic dumortierite inclusions. Soft, milky, universally beautiful. A rose quartz palm stone or tower is the single most-gifted crystal on this site. Mohs 7, light-stable, looks good everywhere. Clear Quartz. The baseline. Pure silicon dioxide, transparent to translucent, and the most abundant mineral in Earth's crust. A natural quartz point is one of the most satisfying objects to hold. Mohs 7. Black Tourmaline. Dense, opaque, matte black with natural vertical striations. A boron silicate mineral at Mohs 7-7.5 — one of the hardest common crystals. Traditionally the go-to stone for grounding and protection. A raw chunk is $8-15. Selenite. A form of gypsum with a silky, moon-like glow. Softer than quartz (Mohs 2), so handle with care and never put it in water. A selenite wand or charging plate is a beautiful functional piece — many collectors use them to display other crystals. Where to Start A single palm stone ($14-20) is the most popular entry point. It fits in your hand, sits on a nightstand, and lets you feel the weight and temperature of real mineral. If you want variety, a crystal kit introduces 4-6 stones at once. If you wear jewelry, a crystal bracelet ($24-42) is an easy daily piece. Not sure which stone is right for you? Take the Crystal Quiz for a personalized recomm
