Crystals from Uruguay — The Deepest Purple Amethyst on Earth Uruguay is renowned for producing the most deeply saturated amethyst in the world. While neighboring Brazil supplies the bulk of global amethyst by volume, Uruguayan material is prized for its consistently richer, darker purple — a deep grape to royal violet that holds its intensity across the full crystal face. The deposits occur in the Artigas department of northern Uruguay, where Mesozoic basalt flows (the Paraná flood basalts) trapped silica-rich fluids in gas cavities that slowly crystallized into the amethyst geodes collectors prize today. Uruguayan amethyst geodes tend to be more compact than their Brazilian counterparts, with thicker, denser crystal druzy and more vivid coloration.
