Pyrite is iron sulfide — FeS2 — crystallizing in the cubic system, which produces the perfect natural cubes and pyritohedra that make it one of the most visually arresting minerals in any collection. Its metallic luster and pale brass-yellow color earned it the name fool's gold, but there is nothing approximate about pyrite as a specimen: at 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, it is harder than most metals, and the geometric precision of a well-formed pyrite cube is difficult to improve upon as a natural object. The cubic habit is pyrite's signature. Pyrite specimens from certain Spanish and Peruvian localities produce cubes with near-perfect right-angle faces that look machined. Pyrite clusters from other deposits show intergrown crystals with the striated faces characteristic of the mineral's growth pattern. Both forms are represented here, and the difference in character between a single perfect pyrite cube and a heavily intergrown cluster is considerable — two distinct objects that happen to share chemistry. Pyrite's surface responds to light in a way few minerals match. In direct light, the metallic faces act almost like mirrors; in ambient light, the material takes on a warmer, more matte character.
