Stichtite gets its pink, lilac, and deep purple coloring from chromium in the mineral itself — a magnesium chromium carbonate, first identified in Tasmania in 1910 and still mined there today. It's a natural, untreated material, which makes it unusual among purple beads. Most stichtite reaches designers as Atlantisite : a single rock combining pink-purple stichtite with green serpentine. That two-mineral structure is why no two strands look alike. Some beads read mostly purple, some mostly green, and many swirl both together.
