A child's first detector needs to be light, simple and genuinely capable of finding something. Toy detectors that beep at everything kill the interest fast. What works is a real machine scaled down: an adjustable shaft that fits a small frame, under about two pounds, and enough discrimination to skip nails so the digging stays fun.
