1D or 2D: the first decision Every scanner here is either a 1D laser or a 2D imager, and that single choice matters more than the brand. A 1D scanner reads the striped barcodes you see on packaged retail goods, and it is the cheaper, perfectly capable pick if that is all you do. A 2D scanner reads those same barcodes plus 2D codes like QR and Data Matrix, and it can read a code shown on a phone screen, which a 1D laser cannot. If you take voucher codes, loyalty apps or e-tickets, or you simply want to be future-proof, choose 2D. A corded scanner plugs into the till or PC over USB, never needs charging, and costs less, which is why it is the standard at a fixed counter. A cordless scanner pairs over Bluetooth and sits in a charging cradle between uses, so it can roam the shop floor or warehouse and reach stock you cannot bring to the counter. Cordless models usually ship with that cradle in the box. If you are kitting out a counter, a cordless scanner pairs neatly with our receipt printers and cash drawers so the whole point of sale works as one.
