The 7-bolt block is stronger and came in later Evo models. The 6-bolt block came in earlier DSM and Evo cars. Both share the same closed deck design, but bolt count affects crank strength, and some swap parts. This engine traces back to the Galant VR4, then powered Evo I through IX and the DSM Eclipse GSX and Talon.
