Vegan means no animal-derived ingredients; cruelty-free means no animal testing at any stage, including by third parties or for regulatory approval in export markets. What to read on the label Common animal-derived ingredients to watch for: beeswax (cera alba), lanolin, carmine (CI 75470), shellac, collagen, keratin, squalene from shark liver, and honey. Look for a stated SPF and PA rating; mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) suit sensitive skin, chemical filters suit oily skin better in Indian humidity. Essential oil load. Highly fragranced "natural" products can still irritate. Patch test anything new on the inner forearm for 24 hours. Preservatives are necessary in any water-based product.
