Herbal gulal uses food-grade and plant-derived colourants on an arrowroot or cornstarch base instead. What to check before you buy gulal The base powder — arrowroot, cornstarch or rice flour rinses out. Silica, chalk and talc do not, and are the usual cause of skin dryness. Colour source — look for named plant or food sources: turmeric for yellow, beetroot for pink, indigo for blue, spinach or henna for green. Texture — good gulal is fine and dry, not gritty.
