Natural Laundry Detergent in India — Liquids, Powders & Soap Nuts Laundry is the largest single source of household detergent entering drains, and most Indian homes wash several loads a week. This range covers plant-based laundry liquids, powders, soap nuts (reetha), laundry bars, fabric conditioners and refill packs. Choosing a detergent Machine type. Front-loading machines need low-foam formulas. Using a top-load powder in a front-loader causes over-sudsing and poor rinsing. Enzymes. Protease and amylase lift protein and starch stains at low temperatures, which saves energy. They are not suitable for wool or silk. Soap nuts. Reetha shells contain natural saponins and work best in warm water on lightly soiled loads; heavy stains still need a pre-treat. Hard water. Much of India has hard water. Look for a builder such as sodium citrate or added washing soda, or dose slightly higher. Fabric care. Bamboo and organic cotton knits last longer washed cold on a gentle cycle with a mild, low-alkaline detergent. Related: cleaning essentials , home care and bamboo clothing .
