Eco-Friendly Tote Bags in India — Cotton, Jute & Canvas A tote is only more sustainable than a plastic bag if you actually keep using it, so buy for durability rather than price. The single most useful number is fabric weight in GSM or ounces. A 6 oz cotton tote is a giveaway bag and will stretch out of shape under a few kilos of groceries; 10–12 oz canvas holds its structure for years. Jute is heavier still and the best choice for wet-market and bulk shopping, though it is stiffer to fold away. Look at the handles before anything else. Handles should be stitched into the side seam and bar-tacked, not simply sewn onto the outer face — face-stitched handles tear the panel when loaded. A boxed or gusseted base lets the bag stand up and stops contents bunching; a flat tote is fine for books and laptops but poor for groceries. On printed totes, water-based and pigment inks crack less over repeated washing than heavy plastisol prints. Organic cotton and recycled cotton canvas both reduce the water and pesticide load compared with conventional cotton; where a certification is claimed, check it is named on the product page rather than implied. Wash cold and line dry — cotton totes shrink in hot water and dryers. Related: Vegan Bags , Sling Bags , Accessories . See our vendor certifications . Pan-India delivery in 3–5 days.
