Summer is the hardest season to get flower from a tree, which is why crepe myrtles dominate this range. They carry crepe-textured trusses for six to ten weeks at the peak of summer, then follow with autumn colour and winter bark. Flowering gums bring the strongest colour of any Australian native over the same period, though they need dry summers and free drainage to perform. Jacarandas and silk trees suit warmer coastal districts. Most summer flowering trees bloom on new wood, so an annual winter prune directly increases the following season's display rather than reducing it.
