During the warmer months from May through October, bluebirds typically find enough food to thrive. However, during harsh conditions such as prolonged chilly, wet weather, snow, cold, or when ice covers most of the wild berries, bluebirds benefit from supplemental feeder food. Mealworms, suet, sunflower hearts, softened fruits, and cornmeal muffins are all suitable options, with mealworms being the best choice as bluebirds will readily eat them year-round. During the breeding season, mealworms are especially helpful as harried parents will gratefully accept them to help feed their ravenous young, supplementing their natural insect diet. Note: Supplemental feeding can make a significant difference for bluebirds and their young during periods of persistent rain and cool weather in the spring. Under these conditions, bluebirds struggle to feed their young and may prioritize their own survival. By providing mealworms and even scrambled eggs, you can help bluebirds and their young survive during these challenging times.
