What are the Origins of Paisley Print Fabrics? The paisley print with its curved teardrop design is thought to originate in Persia and depict a cypress tree and flames, symbolising rebirth and new beginnings. Shawls with paisley prints were popular in Kashmir from the 15th century but the design goes back even further to the Indo-European cultures of over 2,000 years ago. In Britain the town of Paisley in Scotland, gave the print its English name. In the first half of the 19th century, the women of Paisley adapted the traditional paisley pattern to a new method of production using Jacquard looms. The Modern Paisley Print In the mid- to late 1960s, brightly coloured paisley clothing was popular as part of the psychedelic style at the time and was particularly visible during the Summer of Love in 1967, partly due to the Beatles and later The Rolling Stones. Nowadays, paisley patterns are regularly featured on shirts, dresses and blouses.
