The heavier weight Ponte de Roma we source is less likely to pill and with a good structure is a lovely soft double knit jersey. Our Ponte De Roma fabric is perfect for autumn and winter dressmaking including dresses, skirts and cardigans. What is Ponte Roma Fabric? Ponte is usually made from a synthetic fibre such as viscose or polyester and always has some elastane or lycra content to create the stretch that ponte is known for. Ponte has a double knit construction and the close knit weave looks like a Roman bridge, hence the Italian name. It is a heavier and thicker material than a standard jersey as it has a double layer of fabric knitted together. What is Ponte Roma Fabric Made Of? Many of our ponte roma fabrics are a polyester, rayon and elastane blend which are 290 gsm weight, providing the warmth, stretch and versatility of the fabric. We also stock a slightly heavier weight viscose, nylon and elastane blend ponte which is 320 gsm. They are all high quality fabrics which are less likely to pill. What To Make With Ponte Roma Ponte Roma is a versatile dressmaking fabric, excellent for cardigans, dresses, skirts and trousers. It has the advantage of being both comfortable and flattering as it holds its shape well. Ponte is suitable for work wear and occasion wear as it has the double knit structure and doesn’t crease. How to Care for Ponte Roma Fabric Machine wash on a cool cycle inside out to prevent pilling. Ponte can shrink in both directions so wash at 30 degrees and do not tumble dry.
