About

What Are Outside Mount Window Shades? These shades are installed on the wall above your window, covering the trim. They mount outside the window frame, on the face of the trim or on the wall above the opening. Inside mount shades are installed within the frame depth or opening. When installing window treatments, you face two mounting options. Inside mount shades are installed within the frame, providing a clean look and extra insulation. However, exterior mounting becomes necessary when the frame doesn't offer enough depth or when there are obstructions like window handles. You can mount blinds using either method. Benefits of Outside Mount Shades These shades make your window look much bigger and taller, creating an illusion of a larger space. They are wider than the actual window, which enhances the visual impact of your window treatment. These shades also mask unsightly casings. Exterior mounted shades eliminate light gaps completely. They fully cover the window opening without any holes, ensuring maximum light blocking and privacy. This mounting method also provides better light distribution and makes window hardware more accessible. Adding a valance can hide installation hardware for a finished look. A blind installed with exterior mounting offers similar benefits. When to Choose Outside Mount vs Inside Mount Shades Choose exterior mounting when your frame doesn't offer enough depth for inside-mount shades. Most cellular shades require at least 2 inches of recess for an inside flush mount. If that depth isn't available, exterior mounting becomes the better option. Exterior mounting also works well when there are obstructions like window handles or decorative elements that interfere with inside mounting. Interior mounting provides a clean, built-in look but may experience some light gaps around the edges. For maximum light blocking without gaps, exterior mounting is the superior choice. This applies to both shades and blind installations. How to Measure for Outs
