Nails matter, full stop. For many people, square false nails are a way to express personality and indulge creativity. We do a lot with our hands, and having nails which we are proud of can increase our self-esteem and confidence. Meticulously manicured hands are no new thing, even though celebrities such as Kylie Jenner would have you believe otherwise. A desire for great looking nails has been coveted for years. Back in the day, beautiful nails equated to a healthy and wealthy lifestyle, something which is perhaps still partly true today. Nail trends may change throughout the ages, but our obsession never seems to wain. Going back in time to the Victorians or perhaps even earlier, nail care was all about creating a sense of hygiene. Well looked after hands alluded to a better lifestyle where individuals had time to invest in their appearance and well-being. It was the exuberance of the 1920s that started the manicure as we know it today, propelled by the lifestyle of the flappers, readily photographed with a cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other… manicured perfectly, obviously. When did square nails become fashionable? With the emergence of better false nail products and the popularity of acrylic nails, the 1980s saw influential pop stars sporting longer nails with squared off tips. The look was purposely attention grabbing and gave extra edge to pop stars such as Cher or Madonna. Fast-forward to the 1990s and the square nail was still dominating, but frequently women opted for shorter nails. In Britain, the 1990s saw the rise of the “ladette culture” where women actively rejected feminine styling and the shorter square nail fitted perfectly with those goals. Square false nails have only increased in popularity since. Now it is a very common practice to have a professional manicure with nail tips of all shapes and sizes, either for special occasions or everyday wear. Is the square nail still on trend for 2023?
