About

As other bulbs fade in the latter half of summer and autumn approaches, Galtonia, the Summer Hyacinth or Spire Lily, makes its entrance with its white or cream flowers dipping daintily from deep green stems like porcelain bells. These South African wildflowers can create a lovely show, provided you plant them where they get full sunlight (or just a little shade) and be sure the soil is moist but well-drained. Take Galtonias inside in cooler areas for winter storage or protect them with mulch where the climate is kinder. The flower stalks of Galtonia, depending on the variety, can reach between 60 and 120cm (2 to 4ft) in height and make a great display in borders or in patio pots.
